Hey, Medved, This Target’s for You

Slovenia’s Samo Medved had an advantage in his match against Jari Lipponen in their shootout in the second round of the men’s individual archery competition.

Lipponen was shooting at a target. Medved was aiming at a beer can.

Medved beat Lipponen with his fourth extra arrow after the two had tied at 161 points. Each twice had nines from 70 meters in their first two overtime periods, and both had 10s on the third, with magnifying glasses and compass points unable to separate the two. Medved had a nine to Lipponen’s eight on the fourth and deciding arrow.

“I just imagined a beer sitting in a little can instead of the bull’s eye,” said Medved. “It’s yellow, which is the same as the cans I like to drink.”

Sebastien Flute of France, the 1992 gold medalist, was beaten, 161-158, by Martinus Grov of Norway, ranked No. 1 in the world, in the first round. Grov then beat China’s Tang Hua to advance to the round of 16.

Waiting there will be Jose Anchondo of Mexico, who beat 18-arrow world record holder Vadim Chikarev of Kazakhstan by two points.

Also waiting will be Butch Johnson of Woodstock, Conn., who beat Australia’s Matthew Gray and Slovenia’s Matevz Krumpstar; and Justin Huish of Fountain Valley, who easily handled Kazakhstan’s Sergei Martynov, 166-157, and England’s Gary Hardinges, 166-155.
