Record Companies Under Investigation: The nation’s six largest record conglomerates are under investigation by the Florida attorney general’s office for allegedly unfair competition and price-fixing of compact discs, sources said. A spokeswoman for the attorney general’s office in Tallahassee declined to comment on the probe. But sources said the attorney general recently notified record companies that they must turn over a broad range of documents detailing manufacturing, marketing and distribution costs dating back 11 years. The antitrust investigation follows a class-action suit filed six weeks ago by consumers in Tennessee that claims the six major record conglomerates have conspired to inflate the wholesale cost of compact discs.
