State Boxers Required to Undergo HIV Testing

Governor Pete Wilson signed a law Tuesday that will require boxers fighting in California to provide proof of a negative HIV test before receiving a state license.

“The revelation earlier this year that former heavyweight champion Tommy Morrison tested positive for HIV brought to light that California has no testing requirement,” said Assemblyman Bill Hoge, who helped pass the new law that will become effective on Jan. 1, 1997. “This bill remedies this serious problem.”

California joins 13 other states in requiring HIV testing, among them Nevada, New Jersey and New York.

Venus Williams, who won three qualifying matches to get into the main draw of the $450,000 Toshiba Classic at Carlsbad, lost in the first round to Katarina Studenikova of Slovakia, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Conchita Martinez of Spain, the world’s No. 3-ranked player, was extended to three sets by Naoko Sawamatsu of Japan--winning 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Karina Habsudova of Slovakia defeated Pam Shriver 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 and Nathalie Tauziat of France was a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Marianne Werdel Witmeyer.

Alex O’Brien, who won the Pilot Pen International on Sunday, beat 16th-seeded Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the first round of the $2-million du Maurier Open at Toronto.

No. 13 Jason Stoltenberg of Australia defeated Thomas Carbonell of Spain, Tim Henman of Britain upset No. 14 Paul Haarhuis of the Netherlands, and Petr Korda of the Czech Republic defeated South African qualifier Neville Godwin.

Richie Reneberg beat Shuzo Matsuoka of Japan in the first round of the Waldbaum Hamlet Cup at Commack, N.Y., 6-4, 6-2. French Open champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the No. 2 seed from Russia who is ranked fourth in the world, withdrew because of an injured rib.

National figure skating champion Rudy Galindo was arrested for investigation of drunken driving early Tuesday in Los Gatos.

Lavon Ankers, an usher at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, has filed suit seeking $750,000 in damages against Dennis Rodman, who she claims humiliated her by pinching her on the buttocks during an NBA game when he played for the San Antonio Spurs in 1994.

International Boxing Federation heavyweight champion Michael Moorer avoided punishment by agreeing to 100 hours of community service as a partial sentence for disorderly conduct in Greensburg, Pa.

Former NBA guard Alvin Robertson was arrested for allegedly causing $3,400 in damage to a car owned by Sharan Raeford, the woman he was jailed for assaulting last month in San Antonio.

Paralympics

Tony Volpentest, who broke his own 100-meter world record on Monday, will aim for the 200 mark today at the Atlanta Paralympics. Volpentest, who was born without hands or feet, runs wearing springy, lightweight prosthetics made from a form of carbon.

Volpentest, 23, of Federal Way, Wash., completed the 100 in 11.36 seconds. His previous record, set in the 1992 Paralympics, was 11.63.

Dominic Ellison, a point guard at Washington State the last three seasons, is transferring to New Mexico State for his senior year of basketball. Ellison will sit out this coming season and be eligible for the 1997-98 season. . . . Shane Heal, the top three-point shooter in the Australian league last season, and a key Olympic team player, will sign a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. . . .
