Redshirt Season for Blakey of Northridge
Running back Shayne Blakey, a transfer from Antelope Valley College who was expected to compete for a starting job with Cal State Northridge, will use a redshirt year this season after undergoing an appendectomy earlier this month.
Blakey rushed for 605 yards and seven touchdowns last year with the Marauders, earning All-Foothill Conference honors.
Coach Dave Baldwin said he decided to have Blakey miss the season and save a full year of eligibility because the Northridge medical staff said he would be out for another month.
Freshman running back Damien Samuels, who has broken ribs, also will spend the season as a redshirt, Baldwin said.
In order to add depth at the suddenly weakened running back position, Baldwin has moved DeWayne Hervey, a reserve quarterback last season, to tailback.
