6 Inmates Are Shot During Prison Riot
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
At least six inmates were shot during a prison riot, and authorities sent in reinforcements to quell the uprising, the Department of Public Safety said. The inmates at the low-security Federal Correction Center near Eden, Texas, apparently were wounded as they tried to rush a fence in a recreation area, where the disturbance began as a sit-down protest. “Apparently they’ve turned over bleachers and tried to use that maybe to scale the fence,” department spokesman Mike Cox said. It was not known if any inmates had escaped.
