Neighbors to Clean Five-Mile Stretch of Western Avenue

In an effort to clean up a five-mile stretch of Western Avenue from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard down to Century Boulevard, a virtual army of local residents are hitting the streets today to paint out graffiti and clear out the garbage from the sidewalks.

At least 350 people plan to participate in the community pride day that was organized by members of the Empowerment Congress.

The group is made up of constituents of Los Angeles’ 8th City Council District, represented by Mark Ridley-Thomas, and others from parts of Southwest and South-Central Los Angeles.

Participants in the Empowerment Congress are also planning a campaign to educate local homeowners about their responsibilities in maintaining their properties.

Anyone interested in participating in the community pride day should drop by the St. Brigid Catholic Church at 5214 S. Western Avenue between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m., where supplies for the cleanup will be available.
