CASHING IN: The Beatles might not have another reunion song for their fans, but another legendary group that’s in the midst of emptying its vaults will do its part to fill the void. The Rutles, who recently announced that they will issue an album of vintage, unreleased material, now plan to reunite and record a new track for the collection.

In the lore of the Rutles--the mythical pop group concocted by English musician Neil Innes and Monty Python’s Eric Idle--the quartet’s last collaboration was its famous rooftop concert atop the Rutle Corps building in the late ‘60s. Only three of the so-called Pre-Fab Four will be on hand for the reunion, since Idle’s Dirk McQuickly character has left the group.

But they’ll get a little help from their friends when they go into a New York studio next week to cut the new song, “Shangri La.” A cast of celebrities ranging from Oasis to Pat Boone to Richard Pryor is being assembled for the session, which will be taped for a video to accompany the single. The single and the album, “Archaeology,” will both be released by Virgin Records on Oct. 29.

And with the MTV Video Music Awards taking place the next night, remaining Rutles Ron Nasty, Stig O’Hara and Barry Wom are bracing for more luminaries to climb on board.
