Colleges * UC DAVIS vs. CS NORTHRIDGE (0-1)

At North Campus Stadium, 6:05 p.m.

No moral victories this week. Although UC Davis is one of the nation’s top Division II teams and the Aggies beat Northridge, 38-8, last season, they are probably the worst team on the Matadors’ schedule. “I think we need to win,” said Northridge Coach Dave Baldwin, whose team is 0-1. “But I also believe [the Aggies] are a good football team. They kicked our [butts].” Davis, which is playing its season opener, is ranked 16th in the latest Division II poll. The Aggies have a balanced offense, led by quarterback Mike Grieb and running backs Jermaine Rucker and Gerald Burgin. Grieb, who has thrown 157 consecutive passes without an interception, passed for 2,226 yards last season.

CAL LUTHERAN (0-0) vs. UNIVERSITY OF SAN DIEGO (0-1)

At Torero Stadium, 7 p.m.

A pair of first-year coaches will be seeking their first victories tonight when Cal Lutheran kicks off its 1996 season and San Diego plays its home opener in the nonconference game. Scott Squires, a former offensive coordinator for the Kingsmen, was hired as head coach in March. San Diego Coach Kevin McGarry has been with the Toreros for 18 years, including the past 14 as defensive coordinator. Cal Lutheran leads the series between the teams, 9-5, but San Diego has won the last four games, and the past five meetings have been decided by a touchdown or less. “It’s going to be a fun night,” Squires said.

JUNIOR COLLEGES

* MOORPARK vs. VENTURA

At Ventura High, 7 p.m.

The cross-county rivals open the season in a Western State Conference interdivisional game. Ventura has not defeated Moorpark since 1988. The Raiders won last year, 19-0, also in the season opener for both teams. Moorpark went on to finish 8-3, 4-2 in the South Division, and upset El Camino, 30-19, in the Western State Bowl. Ventura went on to a 2-8 record, 1-4 in North Division play.

* VALLEY vs. WEST L.A.

At West L.A., 1 p.m.

Valley is ranked fourth in the state’s preseason poll and West L.A. is, well, cannon fodder in this WSC South Division game. Valley won last year’s matchup, 51-3. The Monarchs have a new quarterback to direct their run-and-shoot offense. He’s David Lins, the former Crespi High standout who played sparingly last season. West L.A. has 37 sophomores but many of the key positions are manned by freshmen.

* ANTELOPE VALLEY vs. PALOMAR

At Palomar, 6 p.m.

Both teams are coming off subpar seasons. Antelope Valley finished 4-6 and Palomar was 5-5. The teams are meeting for the first time since 1990. Antelope Valley leads the series, 12-6, dating to 1947. Sophomore quarterback Shawn Sharp (959 yards passing) leads Antelope Valley, under Coach Brent Carder, in his 27th season with the Marauders. Sharp had the second-best completion rate in the Foothill Conference, 52.8% (84 of 159). Palomar, under first-year Coach Mark Eldridge, is ranked 18th in the state’s preseason poll.

* GLENDALE vs. CITRUS

At Citrus, 7 p.m.

The teams meet in the nonconference opener for the fourth consecutive year. Citrus won last season, 14-10. Glendale slipped to 3-7 last year, 2-3 in the WSC North Division. Citrus had a 7-1 record in the Foothill Conference.

* PIERCE vs. RIO HONDO

At Rio Hondo, 3 p.m.

Pierce Coach Bill Norton is optimistic that the Brahmas can improve on last year’s 1-9 showing, 0-5 in WSC North Division play. But the Brahmas are inexperienced, with 35 freshmen on the 57-man roster. The leading candidates at quarterback are freshmen, Dan McMullen from Kennedy High and Jim Landress from Granada Hills. Receiver Jermaine Brooks, an all-state pick, is the most accomplished player on offense.
