I support the Los Angeles City Council’s vote to create a Hollywood Entertainment District (Sept. 4). I’ve lived two blocks north of the boulevard for over four years but rarely patronize any businesses there save the Chinese, Galaxy or El Capitan cinemas. The sidewalks are excessively littered and what businesses exist are of the tourist-oriented variety: the tackiest of souvenir shops and utterly tasteless “museums.”

I wholeheartedly support the attraction of useful businesses that people who actually reside in the community may patronize: bookstores, coffeehouses, or how about a Trader Joe’s? Maintenance of attractive storefronts, visible security and attractive sidewalks will obviously work to attract desired businesses.

I also support the extension of this district out to Vine or Argyle; the intersection of Hollywood and Vine could definitely use a face-lift. Might some uses be found for the Taft Building and Broadway-Hollywood buildings that would increase foot traffic between them and the Pantages Theater?

Hollywood is a community that has been “down too long.” By working to clean up their own backyard, businesses are taking the first real step toward putting the area on the right track.
