Utah Rallies, Beats Kansas, 45-42

Mike Fouts threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Rocky Henry with 1:39 remaining to give Utah a 45-42 victory over No. 20 Kansas in a nonconference game Saturday night at Salt Lake City.

Fouts, the nephew of former NFL quarterback Dan Fouts, was 21 for 35 for a career-high 476 yards and four touchdowns. He overcame two fourth-quarter interceptions to lead Utah (4-1) on the winning six-play, 82-yard drive.

June Henley gave Kansas (2-1) a 42-38 lead with 4:09 to play when he caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from Matt Johner on a fake field goal. Henley rushed for 216 yards in 41 carries.

Fuamatu-Ma’afala had 103 yards in 17 carries for the Utes.

No. 24 Brigham Young 31, Southern Methodist 3--Steve Sarkisian passed for 358 yards and made several big plays after being sacked that allowed the Cougars to pull away from the Mustangs in a Western Athletic Conference game at Provo, Utah.

In the second quarter, Sarkisian--sacked on second down--completed a third-and-24 pass to K.O. Kealaluhi that went for a 47-yard gain, setting up Ronney Jenkins’ one-yard touchdown run that gave the Cougars (4-1, 2-0) a 17-3 lead.

Just before halftime, Sarkisian--sacked on second down again--passed 19 yards to Kaipo McGuire, then combined with Kealaluhi on a 56-yard play that gave BYU its final touchdown.

SMU (2-3, 1-2) didn’t threaten after driving to the Brigham Young two-yard line on its first possession.

Wyoming 33, Nevada Las Vegas 21--Josh Wallwork threw for 305 yards and three touchdowns as the Cowboys rallied and avoid an upset at Las Vegas.

Wallwork, who completed 15 of 20 passes and also rushed for 54 yards, put Wyoming ahead, 27-21, with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Marcus Harris with 5:16 remaining in the third quarter.

The Cowboys (5-0, 3-0) had to withstand a 486-yard passing effort by freshman Jon Denton, who completed 32 of 46 passes for three touchdowns for the Rebels (0-5, 0-3).

Air Force 45, Rice 17--Beau Morgan ran for one touchdown and passed for one and fullback Nakia Addison scored twice as the Falcons spoiled the Owls’ WAC debut at Air Force Academy, Colo.

The Falcons (3-1, 3-1) scored on three consecutive possessions in the third quarter--a span of 3:51--to take a 31-10 lead. Jason Sanderson’s fumble recovery and interception set up two of the scores.

Rice (1-3, 0-1) held Morgan, who came into the game as the WAC’s leading rusher with a 134-yard average, to eight yards in four carries in the first half.

Fresno State 20, Hawaii 0--Michael Gray rushed for 129 yards and Michael Pittman added 108 as the Bulldogs scored their first shutout since 1989 at Fresno.

Gray scored on a 23-yard run in the first quarter and Jim Arellanes threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Scott Thompson early in the second quarter to give the Bulldogs (1-3, 1-1) a 13-0 halftime lead.

Hawaii (1-4, 0-2) has yet to score in a conference game this season.

New Mexico 27, Texas Christian 7--New Mexico scored back-to-back touchdowns to open the game and ruin the Horned Frogs’ WAC debut at Albuquerque.

TCU (1-2, 0-1) chose to defend the option by keying on New Mexico (4-1, 1-1) tailback Lennox Gordon instead of quarterback Donald Sellers and the decision proved costly. Sellers finished with 332 total yards.

Texas El Paso 37, Northern Illinois 6--Backup quarterback Matt Hickl ran for two touchdowns and passed for one to lead the Miners at De Kalb, Ill.

Hickl was 11 of 16 for 106 yards and also ran 16 times for 77 yards. The Miners (2-2) ran for 305 yards and limited Northern Illinois to 63. The Huskies fell to 1-4.
