FOR THE RECORD - Sept. 29, 1996
I don’t mind anything written that knocks my television career, but I will not tolerate untruths about my personal life (“He’s Made TV What It Is Today,” by Hilary de Vries, Sept. 8). De Vries writes that there is talk that my 25 years of marriage to Candy is little more than a marriage of convenience. How dare she? Where did this vicious lying “talk” come from? De Vries should be so lucky as to have a “marriage of convenience” like Candy and I have.
She further writes: “His house . . . even his family (wife Candy and children Tori and Randy) bear a whiff of the unseemly, the suggestion that his gains have been ill-gotten.” All of this is total trash. My family “unseemly”? What “ill-gotten gains?”
As I said, I don’t mind anyone attacking my work, but to hurt Candy and my kids is sick, yellow journalism that is very painful to the three people I love the most.
Another thing: Your theory that I’m “a lonely and isolated man” is beyond stupidity. Where the hell did that come from--your phone call to a TV psychic hotline?
Get a life, Ms. De Vries, and please stay out of mine and that of my family.
