Arkenberg Scores Four Goals as UCLA beats UCI in Soccer
Traci Arkenberg scored four goals and assisted on another as the UCLA women’s soccer team routed UC Irvine, 5-1, Sunday at Anteater Stadium, snapping a three-game Anteater winning streak.
Arkenberg scored in the 17th minute during a battle for a loose ball with Irvine goalkeeper Stephanie Boes and then hammered in another close-in shot a minute later as the Bruins (4-4-1) jumped ahead en route to a 4-0 halftime lead.
“I’m more disappointed with our play mentally than physically,” UCI Coach Marine Cano said. “Our defense was horrible in the first half, but you have to tip your hat to them. We gave them the chances, but they made the most of them.”
Irvine (7-2-1), scrambling to recover in the second half, eventually outshot the Bruins, 14-13. Sophomore forward Nicole Bucciarelli scored the Anteaters’ lone goal on an assist from Tracie Manz in the 62nd minute.
