AMD Loses $38 Million: The computer chip maker attributed the loss to declining sales and money for severance benefits for laid-off workers. Advanced Micro Devices said its $38-million loss for the three months ended Sept. 29 amounted to 28 cents a share. That contrasts with profit of $42 million, or 30 cents a share, for the same period a year ago. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company last month announced that it was laying off 200 of its 15,200 employees because of weak demand. It reduced earnings by $6 million during the third quarter to pay for severance and benefits for laid-off workers.
