Compaq Cuts Memory Prices: Prices on the computer memory chip modules the Houston-based company sells for use on its desktop, portable and server computer lines were cut as much as 65%. The cuts are part of Compaq Computer Corp.’s new logistics program designed to trim the time between when a customer places an order and when a product is delivered to less than 48 hours. The “Sterling Memory Initiative” will allow Compaq to respond rapidly to falling component prices and rival pricing actions, the company said. The action will be implemented in Canada in the fourth quarter and in stages elsewhere in the first quarter of 1997. Prices for most of the memory modules were cut 35% to 45%.
