Flipper Anderson Goes to Redskins

The Washington Redskins signed veteran free-agent wide receiver Flipper Anderson, who was waived during the exhibition season by the Indianapolis Colts. Anderson will be reunited with former Los Angeles Ram receiving partner Henry Ellard and Coach Norv Turner. Anderson played the first seven years of his career with the Rams, where Ellard also began his career. Turner was the Rams’ receivers coach from 1988 to 1990.

Anderson signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Colts before the 1995 season. He had eight catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns in two games last season before being placed on injured reserve because of a knee injury.

He was released by the Colts in a salary cap move. Anderson has 267 career receptions for 5,357 yards and 28 touchdowns in his career. He holds the NFL record for receiving yards in a game, 336, on 15 catches against the New Orleans Saints in 1989.

The Atlanta Falcons said they would trade suspended quarterback Jeff George to Seattle for Rick Mirer--if George agrees to a long-term contract with the Seahawks.

Charley Taylor, a Falcon spokesman, said the only holdup to a quarterback-for-quarterback trade was George, who as of late Monday afternoon had not decided whether to accept a reported six-year, $30-million contract offer from Seattle.

Seattle Coach Dennis Erickson said John Friesz, who threw for 301 yards Sunday in a 22-15 upset of Miami in his first start of the season, would remain the Seahawks starting quarterback this weekend--trade or no trade.
