Buffalo’s Jones Has Broken Leg

Buffalo safety Henry Jones suffered a broken lower left leg in the third quarter of Sunday’s 16-13 overtime victory over the Indianapolis Colts and could be sidelined for the rest of the season. It is the second consecutive year that Jones has suffered a major injury. He missed the final three regular-season games and Buffalo’s two playoff games last season because of an injured right knee. Jones, one of the premier strong safeties in the NFL, left Rich Stadium on crutches with his leg in a cast after Sunday’s win. Jones, a 1991 first-round pick of the Bills, had eight interceptions in his first year as a starter in 1992 and was named to the Pro Bowl. He recorded a career-high 114 tackles last season despite missing three games.

Running back Bam Morris took the practice field for the first time for the Baltimore Ravens, participating in light drills in preparation for Sunday’s game against Indianapolis.

Coach Ted Marchibroda said he expects the former Pittsburgh Steeler standout to carry the ball a dozen times, complementing starter Earnest Byner. Morris, who last played in a game in the Super Bowl last January, signed with the Ravens as a free agent on Sept. 24, but has been unable to play due to an league-imposed drug suspension.

“[His biggest challenge] is learning the offense and learning as much of the system as he possibly can,” Marchibroda said. “By the same token, you’re not going to use him a great deal of the time because he’s not quite ready yet.”

For the 12th time in his career, Denver Bronco offensive lineman Mark Schlereth has to undergo knee surgery.

Schlereth was scheduled to have surgery today. Pain in his left knee did not subside following the Broncos’ 28-17 victory over San Diego on Sunday.

Schlereth said he expected to be ready for Denver’s next game Oct. 20 against Baltimore. The team has a bye Sunday.

Doctors might have to remove bone from his knee, Schlereth said.

Should doctors find something in his knee that could keep him out of the game, Schlereth said, “I won’t have them fix it.”

One day after giving up touchdown passes of 65, 51 and 80 yards, the Miami Dolphins waived veteran safety Gene Atkins. Atkins overcommitted from his free safety position and Seattle quarterback John Friesz connected with Brian Blades with an 80-yard touchdown pass with just 2:03 left to give the Seahawks a 22-15 win over the Dolphins on Sunday. Atkins also failed to tackle Seattle’s Joey Galloway on a 51-yard touchdown play.
