Mary L. Wier, a retired lieutenant with the U.S. Navy and longtime volunteer with Food Share Inc. of Ventura County, died Wednesday at a local hospital after a long illness. She was 66.

Wier was born March 27, 1930, in Long Beach and lived in Ventura County for 60 years. She was a graduate of UC Berkeley and served in the Navy from 1952 until 1966, retiring with the rank of lieutenant.

She was a Civil Service employee for 32 years at Port Hueneme Naval Ship Missile Systems Engineering Station, retiring in 1985. The division is now known as Port Hueneme Division Naval Surface Warfare Center.

After she retired, Wier became a volunteer with Food Share. “Mary was very friendly and outgoing, and she was very helpful,” said Food Share farm and field coordinator Roger Davis.

Wier was a dispatcher for the regional food bank, an important position, Davis said. “She informed team members about what we were doing the next day. She would also come out and glean,” he said.

Wier is survived by two sisters, Joyce Buchanan of Ventura and Cathy Lewis of Santa Cruz; five nephews; two nieces; one grandnephew; and one grandniece.
