Cardinals Cut Greg Davis, Sign Kevin Butler as Kicker

The Arizona Cardinals cut kicker Greg Davis, who missed three chip-shot field-goal attempts in the last two games, and signed former Chicago Bear kicker Kevin Butler on Tuesday.

Davis, a 10-year veteran, had been with the Cardinals since 1991 and has kicked the six longest field goals in Cardinal history, including two from 55 yards. Davis was nine for 11 before having two misses against the New York Jets two weeks ago and another against the New York Giants on Sunday.

The Cardinals signed Butler, who set 19 club records with the Bears in 11 seasons, after also taking a look at Eddie Murray.

The Cardinals also signed another quarterback, Chad May, who was with the Minnesota Vikings last season, to play behind Boomer Esiason and Stoney Case. Starter Kent Graham is out four to six weeks because of a knee injury. The team also looked at former Rams T.J. Rubley and Hugh Millen before signing May.

In another move, the Cardinals put veteran left guard Duval Love, whose right knee has been hurting since arthroscopic surgery last summer, on injured reserve, ending his string of 73 consecutive starts. Love, who played at UCLA, is out for the season.

The Bears, reduced by injuries to starting undrafted free agent Bobby Neely at tight end, signed five-year veteran and former Raider Kerry Cash to a one-year contract. Cash’s twin brother, Keith, is the tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Minnesota Vikings signed Leroy Hoard in an effort to improve their sagging ground game, which has struggled since Robert Smith went out because of a knee injury two games ago.
