Arroyo Grande 14, Rio Mesa 0--Rio Mesa (8-3) was shut out by the Northern League champion Eagles (9-1) at Arroyo Grande.
The Spartans were able to generate only 161 yards of offense against a tough Eagle defensive front, led by lineman Lucas Smith.
“We played tough but we just couldn’t get in the offense,” said Rio Mesa Coach George Contreras. “I’m proud of the way we played tonight, especially our defense.”
Running back Carl Richardson had the Spartans’ longest play, a 23-yard run early in the second quarter.
Rio Mesa, down 14-0 in the fourth quarter, finally came to life when Perry Dennis recovered Arroyo Grande running back Garret Lintner’s fumble on the Rio Mesa 25.
The Spartans drove to the Eagle 21 behind runs of 11 and six yards by Jay Flores and a 22-yard pass from quarterback Farhaad Azimi to wide receiver Eddie Valenzuela. But the drive sputtered as the Spartans were unable to convert on fourth and nine.
Flores finished with 70 yards on 23 carries. Azimi was four of 13 passing for 44 yards.
Arroyo Grande did not throw a pass.
