It’s Wrong to Exploit Deaths on Racetrack in ‘Disaster’

Safety advances in the sport over the last two decades have reduced auto racing’s risks, but it is regrettable that certain media sectors still choose to glorify those rare occasions when tragedy does occur (“Videotape of Racing Deaths on Fox Brings Complaints,” Calendar, Nov. 21).

The decision to include in the Fox program “When Disaster Strikes” video footage of the accident that took the lives of IndyCar driver Jeff Krosnoff and course marshal Gary Avrin in Toronto this past July shows incredibly poor taste by the Fox television network and the program’s producers. As the sanctioning body of the Toronto race, we at IndyCar remain shocked at Fox’s insensitivity for the families and friends of Mr. Krosnoff and Mr. Avrin. We will continue to take all action necessary to ensure that future airings of this or any other program do not include the Toronto footage.

It is our sincerest hope that in the future Fox will emphasize better judgment instead of deliberately showcasing tragedy under the guise of entertainment programming.
