Camarillo OKs City Yard Contract

Council members have awarded a contract to a North Hollywood construction company to expand the city’s corporation yard, which has outgrown its space behind Grandview Drive.

Under the $546,500 deal, Mills Construction Co. will add 1,865 square feet to the complex, bringing the service center to about 5,000 square feet.

“As the city has grown, the corporation yard needs have expanded,” said Dan Greeley, the city’s director of engineering services. “When we first built the corporation yard, we designed for future expansion.”

The addition, which is expected to be completed by midsummer, will add office space as well as an employee break room, Greeley said.

Eleven companies, including two from Ventura County, competed for the contract. But the bid by Mills Construction was the lowest, beating out an Oxnard firm by nearly $9,000.

City engineering staff had estimated that the project would cost $750,000.

“I guess it’s just a good time of the year,” Greeley said. “You never know.”

The corporation yard construction contract comes as another contractor is completing an expansion at City Hall that will increase office space at that Carmen Drive complex.
