Patterson, No. 20 Indiana Win Preseason NIT Title

Andrae Patterson scored 39 points Friday night to lead 20th-ranked Indiana over No. 6 Duke, 85-69, in the championship of the Preseason NIT at New York.

The 6-foot-8 junior had 20 points in the semifinal this week against Evansville, including the game-winner at the buzzer.

The victory evened Indiana Coach Bob Knight’s record against Mike Krzyzewski, his former player and assistant, at 2-2.

No. 3 Wake Forest 69, Davidson 45--It took more than 20 minutes, but the Demon Deacons (3-0) finally found a solution to the Wildcats’ pesky defense and coasted to victory at Winston-Salem, N.C.

Tim Duncan scored five of his 20 points during the decisive run against Davidson (2-1) in which Wake Forest pushed its 32-28 lead to 49-32 with 8:27 left.

No. 5 Villanova 68, American U., P.R. 62--Alvin Williams scored 20 points, including 10 in the final 3 1/2 minutes, to lead the Wildcats (1-0) past the Division II Pirates at Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

No. 8 Kentucky 104, Alaska Anchorage 72--Derek Anderson scored a career-high 30 points for the Wildcats (2-1) in a rout of the Division II Seawolves. Kentucky advances to today’s final of the Great Alaska Shootout against the College of Charleston.

No. 10 Clemson, 78, Delaware 71--Merl Code scored 19 points, and the Tigers (3-0) used a late 10-0 run to hold off the surprisingly tough Blue Hens (2-1) in the Puerto Rico Shootout.

Harold Jamison added 15 points and six rebounds for the Tigers, who led 62-59 before the Blue Hens went scoreless for three minutes.

No. 12 Syracuse 85, Maine 65--Todd Burgan scored 18 points, including three three-pointers, to lead the Orangemen (2-1) over the Black Bears (1-3) in the Great Alaska Shootout at Anchorage. Otis Hill scored 16 points for Syracuse.

No. 14 North Carolina 82, Pittsburgh 61--Antawn Jamison was a one-man gang against the Panthers (0-3) in the second half and finished with 36 points to guide the Tar Heels (2-1) to the victory at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Jamison scored the most points of any Tar Heel to play in the Dean Smith Center since it opened in January 1986. Lionel Simmons of LaSalle holds the building record, scoring 37 points on Jan. 9, 1988.

No. 15 Fresno State 87, Northeastern 71--Dominick Young made three consecutive three-point baskets midway through the second half to break open a close game and the Bulldogs (3-0) defeated the Huskies (0-3) at the Coors Light Classic at Fresno.

College of Charleston 82, No. 21 Stanford 78--The Cougars used eight free throws in the final 26 seconds and Anthony Johnson’s 20 points to beat the Cardinal (1-1) in the Great Alaska Shootout.

No. 22 Tulsa 55, Evansville 51--Michael Ruffin had 10 points, 12 rebounds and five blocked shots to lead the Golden Hurricane (3-1) over the Purple Aces (3-2) in the third-place game of the Preseason NIT at New York.

No. 24 Minnesota 104, Mayaguez 62--John Thomas scored 21 points and Bobby Jackson had 14, leading the Golden Gophers (3-0) over the Bulldogs in the San Juan Shootout in Puerto Rico.

Matt Harpring scored 13 of his season-high 29 points during a 20-4 first-half run as Georgia Tech (3-0) routed Radford (1-2), 91-60, at Atlanta. . . . Rashamel Jones scored 16 points to lead four teammates in double figures as Connecticut (2-1) defeated Yale (1-2), 72-39, at Hartford, Conn. . . . Brian Johnson and Jerry Hester keyed a second-half comeback as Illinois (3-0) overtook Texas Christian (2-1), 73-67, in an opening-round game of the Big Island Invitational Tournament at Hilo, Hawaii. . . . Fred Edmonds scored 20 points to lead Colorado (2-0) to a 78-72 overtime victory over Auburn (1-2) in the Big Island Invitational. . . . . . . WOMEN

No. 11 Texas Tech 95, UCLA 80--Maylana Martin broke Denise Curry’s UCLA freshman single-game scoring record with 32 points in a losing effort at Pauley Pavilion. Martin was 11 for 12 from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead UCLA (1-1). Rene Hanebutt led Texas Tech (3-0) with 27 points.
