Wisconsin’s Dayne Runs for 339 Yards
Freshman running back Ron Dayne gained 339 yards in 36 carries and scored four touchdowns as Wisconsin (7-5) stayed in the hunt for a bowl berth by defeating Hawaii, 59-10, at Honolulu, Saturday.
Dayne, who didn’t become a starter until the fifth game, set NCAA single-season freshman records for rushing yards (1,863) and carries (295). He also tied Herschel Walker’s freshman record of four 200-yard games.

The University of Kentucky has scheduled a news conference today to announce a new coach, and speculation for weeks has pointed to Hal Mumme, coach of Division II Valdosta State. Kentucky fired Bill Curry on Oct. 21. . . . . Chicago Bear offensive coordinator Ron Turner has been hired as the new coach at Illinois, WBBM-TV in Chicago reported. A news conference is scheduled for today. . . . With 24-21 victory over previously top-ranked Florida, Florida State (11-0) replaced the Gators (10-1) atop the Associated Press Top 25 poll. Florida, which held the No. 1 ranking for 10 weeks, fell to No. 4 behind undefeated Arizona State (11-0) and Nebraska (10-1). Ohio State is ranked fifth.
