1 Man Killed, 1 Injured on Ocean Fishing Trip
A boating accident during a fishing trip off the coast of Rancho Palos Verdes on Thursday left one man dead and another injured, authorities said.
A call for help was sent about 2:15 p.m. by someone reporting the boat he was aboard was sinking, lifeguard Capt. Bob Buchanan said.
Rescue boats were dispatched from Cabrillo Beach and Redondo Beach, Buchanan said, and the overturned 21-foot boat was spotted about 15 minutes later.
“One person was hanging on to the side of the hull,” he said.
That man suffered mild hypothermia from the 57-degree water, the captain said. The other man was plucked from the water near the boat. Lifeguards performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation on the second man while heading to shore, but he died at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, Buchanan said.
The identities of the men were not immediately released, but both were were believed to be in their 50s.
The cause of the accident was under investigation.
