Mendiola Leads El Toro Past University
Fabrizio Mendiola scored a game-high 25 points for seventh-ranked El Toro, which beat host University, 85-64, in a nonleague boys’ basketball game Monday.
Josh Rupprecht added 18 points, Mark Wulfemeyer scored 17 and Justin Butler had 14 for El Toro (13-3).
Eric Palmer scored 22 points for University (9-6).
In another nonleague game:
Orangewood Academy 55, Los Angeles Shalhevet 51--Nickolas Wolfsen scored 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Orangewood (6-3). Patric Rainey scored 13 points and Joey Oswald scored 12 on four three-pointers for the Spartans.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Marina 80, Santa Ana Valley 24--Nikki Lee, a freshman forward, scored 14 points, 12 of which came in the second quarter, for host Marina (11-2). Natalie Nakase scored 12 points and had seven assists and seven steals for Marina.
Orangewood Academy 47, Los Angeles Shalhevet 31--After scoring only four first-quarter points, Orangewood (2-6) rallied to outscore Shalhevet 14-4 in the second. Jenni Barron led the Spartans with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Jaime Steiner and Crystal Holmes each had 10 points.
Santa Margarita 59, Saddleback 27--Megan Cargile scored 12 points, Kate Toman nine and Danielle Bennett eight for visiting Santa Margarita (12-4).
Troy 63, Garden Grove 33--Heidi Hardeman scored 24 points to lead Troy (10-4). Katie Werdel led Garden Grove (4-10) with 10 points.
Cypress 50, La Quinta 24--Kristen Wong scored 12 points and Lisa Choi 10 to lead Cypress (10-5).
Buena Park 47, Heritage Christian 28--Kate Ragains had four three-pointers and finished with 28 points for visiting Buena Park.
Foothill 61, Tustin 52--Robyn Templeton scored 17 points for visiting Foothill (8-5).
In nonleague boys’ soccer:
Esperanza 1, El Dorado 0--Russell Seimer of El Dorado (12-3-3) was ejected with 20 minutes left in the game and the Golden Hawks were forced to play the remainder of the game a man short. Mike Murphy took advantage with two minutes left, when he headed in a throw-in from Van Skoglund giving Esperanza (14-1-1) the victory.
Villa Park 3, Garden Grove 2--Bob Bautista scored the winning goal on a header in the 57th minute to lead Villa Park (7-3-2). Garden Grove is 3-6-1.
Southern California Christian 4, Riverside Bethel Christian 3--Josh Mazer scored four first-half goals for Southern California Christian (2-7). Mazer has nine goals this season.
Orange 1, Trabuco Hills 0--Augustine Valverde scored the winning goal off a corner kick from Genar Lopez midway through the second half for third-ranked Orange (10-1-2). Goalkeeper Neil Van Zuiden had two saves in his eighth shutout of the season.
Newport Harbor 3, Estancia 0--Manny Opresso scored two goals in the first half, one on a penalty kick, for Newport Harbor.
In nonleague girls’ soccer:
Marina 3, Cerritos 0--Monique Alvino, Jennie Wooten and Aimee Knudson each scored a goal to lead Marina (6-5).
