2 Grammy Nods for No Doubt
Anaheim rock band No Doubt, the Cinderella story of 1996 on Orange County’s pop music scene, added another page to that tale on Tuesday by being nominated for two Grammy awards.
“It’s so awesome, so crazy,” bassist Tony Kanal said Tuesday. “I don’t think we have much of a chance of winning, but just to be nominated is flattering in itself.”
One of a small handful of county acts ever nominated for the music industry’s highest award, No Doubt is up for best new artist (against Garbage, Jewel, LeAnn Rimes and the Tony Rich Project) and rock album for “Tragic Kingdom” (along with efforts by Sheryl Crow, the Dave Matthews Band, Bonnie Raitt and Neil Young & Crazy Horse).
“Tragic Kingdom” has sold almost 4.5 million copies since its release 15 months ago and has been on top of Billboard’s pop album chart four weeks. No Doubt also is the only Orange County act ever to have the nation’s No. 1 album.
No Doubt joins the Righteous Brothers, whose members Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield are O.C. natives, and former Villa Park resident Jose Feliciano as the only county performers with Grammy nods. Medley is the only O.C. Grammy winner, for “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” his 1987 duet with Jennifer Warnes.
Grammys will be awarded in New York in a nationally televised ceremony Feb. 26. “We’re going to perform, too,” Kanal said, “so that’s kind of awesome.” No Doubt and the Vandals play Friday at the Glass House, 200 W. Second St. Pomona. 8 p.m. $10, benefits Children’s Hospital of Orange County. (909) 872-7441.
