Academic Champions Await State Contest
Fresh from their first-place finish in the Orange County Academic Decathlon in December, the Trabuco Hills High School team is back in training, studying for the state competition in March.
Trabuco Hills unseated district rival Laguna Hills High to claim the top spot in the county contest. The school’s victory ended a three-year string of second-place finishes and closed the books on Laguna Hills’ eight-year reign.
The team and their coach, teacher Janet Hooper, were honored this week by the Saddleback Valley Unified School District at a school board meeting.
The Orange County decathlon championship team consists of Carlos Mladineo, Khanh Ngo, Evelyn Townsell, Wilmer Khong, Jeff Lewis, Janet Tran, Jerome Carman, Mitchell Khong and Jeremy Wiederspahn.
The state decathlon is March 14, 15 and 16 at Cal Poly Pomona. The state champion goes to Utah in April for the nationals.
