Mudslide Slams, Derails Freight Train
From Times Staff and Wire Reports
A freight train was derailed by a mudslide, sending five cars carrying bulk mail and other cargo into the chilly waters of Puget Sound, authorities said. No one was injured. Officials said the southbound train derailed about 14 miles north of Seattle after a slide swept down and buried nearly 100 yards of track under 25 feet of mud and debris, slamming into the 35-car train just behind its three locomotives. Officials said that freight traffic to the Seattle area was being rerouted and that crews hoped to reopen the track within 48 hours.
