Woman Struck by Car, Killed in Irvine
IRVINE — A 74-year-old woman on her way to catch a bus home was struck and killed Thursday as she crossed Jeffrey Road, police said.
A car heading north on Jeffrey about 6 p.m. struck Santa Ana resident Bertha Ynez Martinez in the left leg, hurling her over the windshield and behind the car, police Officer Don Murray said.
Martinez landed in the bike lane near Triomphe Avenue, and died at the scene, Murray said. She was not in a marked crosswalk, police said.
The driver, an Irvine woman, was not cited pending the completion of the investigation, police said. The accident prompted authorities to shut down part of Jeffrey Road for more than an hour during the evening commute, Murray said.
Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call (714) 724-7024.
