Elizabeth Rudel Gatov; Former U.S. Treasurer
Elizabeth Rudel Gatov, 85, former treasurer of the United States. Gatov, who served in the Treasury position during the John F. Kennedy administration, was born in Montreal and educated at Smith College and the University of Michigan. She began a teaching career in private schools in Southern Pines, N.C., where she also directed well-baby clinics. In 1944, she moved to Kentfield, Calif., where she became a major community worker in Planned Parenthood and other San Francisco-area organizations. She was also a founder and vice president of First Savings & Loan Assn. in San Rafael, Calif. Active in Democratic politics, Gatov served as Democratic national committeewoman from California for nine years and chaired several campaigns for state political candidates.
