Gratitude to Police Results in $2,000 Gift

A resident whose home was burglarized was so jubilant when police recovered his property that he made an anonymous $2,000 donation to the city.

The City Council this week accepted the gift and dedicated the money to the city’s Young Adult Teen Club, which is advised by police officers and aims to keep juveniles from becoming involved in crime.

Police Chief David S. Barr gave council members a brief description Tuesday of how the donation came about. A home was recently burglarized, he said, and the thieves fled with “a substantial amount of cash.”

Within a few days, police traced the crime to two juveniles, arrested them and recovered almost all of the money, Barr said. He would not say how much cash was involved, except that it was “in the thousands.”

Mayor Kenneth Blake said the decision to give the $2,000 donation to the youth club was fitting: The gift made because a crime by juveniles was solved will go to help other youths stay out of trouble.
