Mission Viejo Rallies to Beat San Clemente

Gabe Burt scored 12 points in the fourth quarter as Mission Viejo came back to defeat seventh-ranked San Clemente, 58-52, in a South Coast League boys’ basketball game Wednesday at San Clemente.

The Diablos (14-9, 3-4) trailed, 39-36, after three quarters, but then outscored San Clemente, 22-13. Burt scored 21 points in the game and Commander King had 13 for Mission Viejo.

Jan Tatala scored 18 points to lead the Tritons (17-5, 4-3).

In other South Coast League games:

Capistrano Valley 90, Trabuco Hills 80--Dan Galvanoni scored 30 points, including five of six three-pointers, and had 11 assists, all in the first three quarters for Capistrano Valley (15-7, 5-2). Austin Moherman had 22 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots for eighth-ranked Capistrano Valley. Chris Majors scored 20 points fro Trabuco Hills (0-7 in league).

Mater Dei 107, Dana Hills 59--Tom Lippold scored 24 points, Kevin Augustine had 19 points and 13 assists, and Mike Vukovich 18 points and 12 rebounds for top-ranked Mater Dei (22-2, 7-0).

In the Century League:

El Modena 81, Santa Ana Valley 71--Tommy Ngo scored 29 points and George Gurrola added 22 points, nine rebounds and seven assists to lead El Modena (11-11, 3-4). Seth Roblee led Santa Ana Valley (10-12, 3-4) with 29 points.

Villa Park 57, Canyon 45--Eric Chenowith scored 24 points and had 10 rebounds as fourth-ranked Villa Park (17-4, 7-0) outscored Canyon 34-23 in the second half for the victory. Justin Haney led Canyon (10-13, 3-4) with 14 points, including four three-pointers, and nine rebounds.

In the Freeway League:

Sonora 58, Buena Park 47--Ben Jones scored eight of his 14 points in the fourth quarter for visiting Sonora (20-3, 7-0), ranked third in the county. Mike Moran scored 15 points for Buena Park (12-11, 3-4).

In the Garden Grove League:

Santiago 77, Bolsa Grande 71--Oscar Beltran scored eight of his 20 points in the fourth quarter for visiting Santiago. Duc Nguyen scored 28 points including four three-pointers for Bolsa Grande (10-13, 4-6).

In the Pacific Coast League:

Aliso Niguel 56, Laguna Beach 53--Jeff Munsell scored 17 points and Nathan Hair and Yousof Etemadi each scored 12 points for Aliso Niguel (15-8, 5-2). B.J. Jameson scored 19 points and Chris Sirianni added 18 for Laguna Beach (1-6 in league).

University 79, Laguna Hills 72--University led, 50-34, before Laguna Hills went on a 21-0 run midway through the third quarter to take a 55-50 lead early in the fourth. University (14-8, 5-2) responded, outscoring Laguna Hills (9-13, 4-3) in the last seven minutes 29-17.

Eric Palmer led the Trojans with 20 points, Larry Johnson scored 18 and Jeff Groendal added 16 points, including five three-pointers and Nima Adloo scored 16. Josh Pierson led Laguna Hills with a game-high 26 points.

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 78, Corona del Mar 53--Brad Gloger scored 21 points to lead 10th ranked Santa Margarita (16-6, 6-1). Ryan Forehan-Kelly and Craig Rice hit four three-pointers each for the Eagles as Forehan-Kelly finished with 18 points and eight rebounds and Rice had 12 points.

Woodbridge 86, Newport Harbor 58--William Stovall scored 22 points and Chris Burgess added 20 as No. 2 Woodbridge (19-3, 7-0) remained undefeated in league. Stovall added six steals and Burgess grabbed 14 rebounds and had six assists. Dan Pulido led Newport Harbor (12-10, 3-4) with 17 points.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza 57, Edison 55--Jason Dillard broke a 55-55 tie, making a 15-footer with six seconds remaining then Everett Winkler made a steal with two seconds remaining to preserve the victory for host Esperanza (12-11, 5-2).

Los Alamitos 74, Fountain Valley 61--Kevin Staniec scored all of his 23 points in the second half and made his five three-pointers in the third quarter to help the host Griffins (20-3), ranked third in the county, outscore the Barons, 31-12, in the period to rally from a seven-point halftime deficit.

Ben Moreau scored 17 points for Fountain Valley (6-17, 1-6).
