Maritime Museum Receives Key Grant
The Ventura County Maritime Museum has moved one step closer to getting national accreditation after receiving an assessment grant from the national Institute of Museum and Library Services.
The museum will use the grant money to evaluate its current operations, establish priorities to achieve professional museum standards and create ways to best serve the community.
Harry Nelson, chairman of the museum’s Board of Trustees, said the grant will go a long way toward improving the museum and making the county’s history more relevant to its residents.
“Our maritime history is a priceless historical treasure which is poorly remembered and frequently misunderstood by many of us,” Nelson said. “None of us would be here were it not for our maritime predecessors, and what better way to learn about them than through a museum that can present our vivid and colorful past. That’s our mission and the grant will help fulfill it.”
Opened in 1991, the Ventura Maritime Museum is at Fisherman’s Wharf in the Channel Islands Harbor. It is open to the public 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
