Asian American Leaders Rally Voters

Asian American candidates and community leaders teamed up Thursday to urge Asian American voters not to let the unfolding national campaign funding scandal discourage them from political involvement--especially in upcoming local elections.

“All politics is local,” Charles Woo, president of Chinese Americans United for Self-Empowerment, said at a downtown Los Angeles news conference. “The atmosphere is intimidating right now . . . [but] the best defense is participation.”

Thirteen Asian Americans are seeking City Council, community college and school board spots in eight cities and districts in Los Angeles County on March 4, April 1 and April 8.

“We want to celebrate Asian Americans running for office,” said Munson Kwok, head of of the century-old Chinese American Citizens Alliance in Los Angeles.
