In Southern Section Division V-AA quarterfinals:

Santa Clara 49, Bishop Diego 46--Santa Clara (20-4) held off a fourth-quarter surge by the Cardinals (17-9) at Bishop Diego.

The game looked to be a blowout in its early stages, as the Saints held Bishop Diego to two single-digit quarters and led, 42-26, going into the fourth quarter.

But the Cardinals opted for an aggressive fourth-quarter approach that put Santa Clara on the free-throw line seven times, where poor foul shooting (the Saints were five for 13) helped Bishop Diego close the gap.

In the fourth quarter, the Cardinals hit all three of their three-point attempts while scoring 20 points. Santa Clara managed only seven points.

The Saints, the Frontier League champions, face Serra, a 58-40 winner over Downey Calvary Chapel, Tuesday in the semifinals.

Nick Jones had 20 points and 12 rebounds for Santa Clara, Brad Beeson had 10 rebounds, and Skye Peterson had seven assists.

Joe Lammers led Bishop Diego with 14 points.

Montclair Prep 49, Chadwick 47--Darin Brock, the Mounties’ lone senior, scored 16 of his 17 points in the second half at Montclair Prep.

After Micah Cohen made one of two free throws with 14 seconds left, Drew Rodden of Chadwick (17-12) missed a 10-footer as time expired.

Kevin Bentley scored 11 points and Rocky Steryo, who averaged nearly 23 points a game, was held to eight for Montclair Prep (20-6), which led nearly the entire game.

David Cann scored 17 points for Chadwick.

The defending section champion Mounties will play top-seeded Pasadena Poly Tuesday at a site to be determined.

Pasadena Poly 48, Campbell Hall 36--The Vikings (14-13) pulled within six points of the Panthers (25-0) before Robert Reeder put the game away by hitting 11 of 13 fourth-quarter free throws at Harvard-Westlake.

“I’m really proud of the way our kids really battled inside,” said Campbell Hall Coach Todd Morenz. “They did everything they could.”

Reeder (6-6) finished with a game-high 25 points. Junior point guard Josh Glass led Campbell Hall with 12 points.

Poly took a 20-13 halftime lead after holding Campbell Hall to just two points in the second quarter. But the Vikings outscored the Panthers, 10-7, in the third quarter to get back in the game.
