From Times Staff and Wire Reports

A proposal to outlaw nude sunbathing on some Florida beaches was defeated by lawmakers who said it would hurt the state’s tourism industry. By a 6-3 margin, the Florida House Crime and Punishment Committee defied its chairman’s wishes and defeated a measure that would have made it illegal to be seen naked in public at any of 10 federal parks across the state. The proposal hit organized opposition not only from nudists’ rights groups but from South Florida lawmakers and tourism officials.
