Marine Generals to Play in Golf Benefit

Two high-ranking Marine Corps officers will trade their weapons for golf clubs and uniforms for golf pants Monday, as they visit Los Angeles to participate in the first Devil Dog Golf Classic.

Gen. Robert B. Johnston and Gen. Louis H. Wilson will play 18 holes of golf to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Assn., beginning at 10 a.m. at the Braemer Country Club, 4001 Reseda Blvd., Tarzana, in a golf tournament sponsored by the Marine Corps Coordinating Council of Los Angeles.

About 200 former Marines and business and community members are expected to participate in the event to raise funds for MDA, a nonprofit organization researching treatments and cures for 40 neuromuscular diseases.

Fees to participate are $150 for individual players, and $750 for a foursome.

Johnston served as chief of staff for Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf in the Persian Gulf War, and Wilson is the 26th commandant of the Marine Corps.
