BOYS’ BASKETBALL / STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Modesto Christian 56, San Diego Horizon 47--Horizon, trying to become the second San Diego Section team to win a state boys’ title, blew a nine-point second-quarter lead and lost in the Division V final.
Modesto Christian (33-0) trailed, 28-25, at halftime but used a matchup zone defense to outscore Horizon, 15-5, in the third quarter. Christian, which started three freshmen and a junior, went on an 11-2 run to begin the fourth quarter and was never threatened. The Crusaders shot only 28% in the first half but made 13 of 19 shots in the second half.
Junior Jaciel Red, who had been ill all week, led Christian with 28 points, 12 rebounds, four blocks and three steals, and freshman Brad Watkins scored 17 points and had nine rebounds.
Junior forward Ray Harrington led Horizon (30-2) with 13 points and five rebounds but made only two of 11 shots from the field.
