Westminster Beats Tustin in League Opener
Chris Brewer was two for two with a stolen base and a run scored as Westminster defeated 10th-ranked Tustin, 3-2, Friday in a Golden West League baseball opener.
Mike Carey (3-1) pitched a complete game for Westminster (5-3, 1-0), striking out two and giving up only four hits. Tustin is 4-3, 0-1.
In the Century League:
Canyon 7, Santa Ana Valley 1--Jeff Leuenberger pitched a two-hitter, striking out six and walking two for top-ranked Canyon (7-1, 1-0).
Tommy Duarte doubled in two runs to cap a five-run fifth inning for Canyon. Mike Tomarelli was two for four with two RBIs and a run scored.
Foothill 5, Villa Park 4--Josh Arhart scored on a passed ball to cap a three-run inning in the top of the seventh for Foothill (4-1, 0-1), giving the Knights a 5-2 lead.
In the Freeway League:
Sonora 20, Fullerton 2--Jeremy Weinberg hit two home runs, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs for the Raiders (6-1, 1-0).
Weinberg (3-0) also pitched, striking out 10 and giving up two unearned runs and six hits.
In the Golden West League:
Servite 6, Ocean View 4--Bill Brundige hit the game-winning home run in the top of the seventh for seventh-ranked Servite (5-1, 1-0).
Jason Martini hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the first to give Ocean View (3-3, 0-1) a 3-0 lead.
In the Pacific Coast League:
University 16, Laguna Beach 5--Garrett Atkins hit three home runs and had five RBIs for University. Atkins has seven home runs in eight games for the Trojans (5-3, 1-0).
Matt McNeil, Eli Stokols, Steve Nolan and Gilbert Suiauloa homered for University.
In the Sea View League:
El Toro 11, Woodbridge 4--Matt Steinau was four for five, scored four runs and had four RBIs for El Toro (5-3, 1-0).
Brady Benson was two for two with two runs scored and an RBI for the Chargers. Darren MacLeod (1-1) pitched five innings for El Toro, giving up only one hit.
In the South Coast League:
Dana Hills 3, Capistrano Valley 3 (9)--Fifth-ranked Capistrano Valley (2-4-1, 0-0-1) rallied from a 3-0 deficit scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score.
Mater Dei 4, Mission Viejo 0--Mike Kolbach pitched a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts for fourth-ranked Mater (5-2, 1-0).
Pat Manning hit a two-run home run to cap a three-run third inning. Tony Micheletti was three for three, including a solo home run in the sixth, and scored three runs.
