3 Men Arrested in Attempted Hold-Up of Guard
SANTA CLARITA — Three men who allegedly tried to rob an armored truck guard in a Newhall supermarket were arrested by Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies Saturday afternoon.
Andres Hernandez, 24; Enrique Sanchez, 27; and Angel Gonzalez, 29, all from Lynwood, were arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and were being held at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station on $50,000 bail apiece.
According to Sheriff’s Department officials, the three suspects entered a Vons at 24160 Lyons Ave. at noon. Two of the men went to the back of the store while one stayed in front, according to the deputies’ report.
A few minutes later, a guard from the Armored Transport Corp. of Van Nuys walked into the store with two bags of money and was approached by two of the suspects.
A Sheriff’s Department spokesman didn’t know if the suspects, who were unarmed, said anything to the guard. But the guard reportedly warned the men to stay back and, after several warnings, pulled his gun.
“If a guard feels that his safety is threatened, he can take whatever action is necessary to protect himself and his cargo,” said Sheriff’s Lt. Daniel Castillo.
The suspects fled on foot, Castillo said. Sheriff’s deputies captured them nearby.
No injuries were reported.
