The Vietnamese Community of Southern California, which was denied a special event permit to commemorate the 1975 fall of Saigon, won permission for a lesser event: the flying of flags along Bolsa Avenue.
The group wanted to fly American and former Republic of South Vietnam flags. The City Council agreed to allow the request on condition that the U.S. flag took a prominent position.
“I don’t mind if flags from other counties are flown, but they have to show proper respect for the American flag,” Councilwoman Margie L. Rice said.
The community group was denied a permit to hold a large gathering on Bolsa Avenue after city officials said it did not follow proper procedure.
