1 Held, 1 Released in Shooting of Deputies
Authorities have released one man and are holding another on $1-million bail in the shooting this week of two Ventura County sheriff’s deputies in Nyeland Acres.
Emiliano Orozco, 20, of Oxnard was in court Friday, but his arraignment on attempted murder charges was postponed two weeks.
Orozco allegedly shot and wounded Senior Deputy Michael Martinez, 41, and grazed Deputy Jennifer Sezzi, 30, Tuesday night after the deputies pulled him over for a routine traffic stop.
The man who was in the car with Orozco that night, 23-year-old Pablo Cortez De la Torre of Oxnard, was released from custody Thursday night, said Deputy Dist. Atty. Jim Ellison.
“Basically, he was released because he didn’t do anything,” Ellison said.
Orozco and De la Torre were pulled over by deputies about 9 p.m. Tuesday for having a faulty taillight.
As one of the deputies began to frisk Orozco, he pulled a gun and began firing, officials said. Martinez was hit three times at close range--two slugs hit his bulletproof vest and the third shattered his shoulder, injuring him seriously. Sezzi was grazed in the shoulder but did not require medical attention.
De la Torre gave himself up after the shooting, but it took a massive search to find Orozco, who was picked up the next day.
Investigators said De la Torre has been cooperative and that he had no idea Orozco was armed. Authorities said they still have not established any motive for the shooting.
