Cinco de Mayo Festival Features Wide Cultural Mix
In what is billed as a coming together party, the 6th annual Watts Latino / African American Cinco de Mayo Celebration will be held today, featuring a parade that will culminate with a fiesta at the Watts Labor Community Action Committee. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at Watts Avenue and Santa Ana Boulevard.
“The main purpose of the event, beside the [Mexican] victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla, is to bring together the African American, Latino and other ethnic communities in a climate of mutual respect, tolerance, and social interaction,” said Arturo Ybarra, president of the Watts/Century Latino Organization.
The fiesta will include children’s games, clowns, karate demonstrations, ethnic foods and ethnic dancers.
