Harvard-Westlake Suffers Through a Gray Day, 7-6
Top-ranked Chaminade High got an unexpected scare from Harvard-Westlake but Chris Gray saved the day with his pitching and batting in the Eagles’ 7-6, eight-inning victory in a Mission League baseball game Friday at Chaminade.
Chaminade (21-1, 7-1) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game before Gray’s one-out double to right-center field in the eighth scored Keith Mait with the winning run.
The seven-hit pitching of Matt Berkson helped the Wolverines take a 6-5 lead into the seventh. Gray (8-0) took over from there, shutting out the Wolverines on one hit over the final 2 2/3 innings for his second victory of the week.
Brian Kirby doubled twice and had four RBIs for Chaminade.
Justin Child had two doubles for Harvard-Westlake (3-12, 1-7).
Buena 3, Ventura 1--Sophomore left-hander Matt Foster (3-1) allowed only a third-inning double by Jason Branch while striking out nine in a Channel League game at Ventura.
David Arroyo and Mike Frick had solo home runs for the Bulldogs (9-5-1, 5-4-1).
Oak Park 12, St. Bonaventure 4--Ryan Carl’s two-run triple in a four-run fifth inning gave the Eagles an 8-4 lead in a Tri-Valley League game at St. Bonaventure.
Oak Park (13-6, 8-1) clinched at least a tie for the league championship.
Carl had three RBIs. Danny Wasserman had three hits and two RBIs.
Drew Corona doubled, tripled and drove in three runs for St. Bonaventure (7-11, 4-5).
Dos Pueblos 7, Rio Mesa 3--Greg Ramirez (7-1) allowed five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season, and the Spartans (17-3, 8-2) slipped into a tie with Hueneme for the Channel League lead.
Hueneme 6, Oxnard 0--Pedro Cervantes pitched a two-hitter with six strikeouts and Francisco Camarena had three hits and three RBIs for the Vikings ( 14-6, 8-2) in a Channel League game at Oxnard (5-10, 2-8).
Aguora 5, Simi Valley 4--Two throwing errors by pitcher Darin Campbell gave the Chargers (9-11, 4-6) two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh of a Marmonte League game at Agoura.
Dave Krewson had a home run, a double and two RBIs for Simi Valley (12-9, 5-5.)
Royal 4, Westlake 0--Matt Rainer (6-1) pitched his way out of a bases-loaded, none-out situation in the first and threw a two-hitter for the Highlanders (13-6, 9-1) in a Marmonte League game at Westlake.
Newbury Park 16, Channel Islands 8--Ryan Shipton had four of the Panthers’ 19 hits in a Marmonte League game at Channel Islands.
Shipton had a two-run home run, a three-run double and drove in six runs for Newbury Park (11-11, 3-7).
Quartz Hill 8, Antelope Valley 2--Johnny Smith had two doubles and three RBIs for the Rebels in a Golden League game at Antelope Valley.
Sean Douglass went four innings for the Antelopes (14-8, 7-1), allowing nine hits and four earned runs.
Mark Madsen pitched a seven-hitter, striking out six for the Rebels (11-12, 3-6).
Saugus 12, Valencia 8--Luke Miller was four for four, including a home run, for the Centurions in a Foothill League game at Saugus.
Brent Pellico had three hits and three RBIs for Saugus (12-8-1, 8-3).
Brady Burrill had three hits for Valencia (11-9, 5-6).
Camarillo 11, Thousand Oaks 3--Sophomore Shane Miranda (6-0) allowed three hits and one earned run over six innings for the Scorpions (19-4-1, 8-1-1) in a Marmonte League game at Camarillo.
Miranda had three hits and three RBIs, including his fifth home run.
Hart 12, Canyon 1--Bobby Graves (5-2) pitched a three-hitter for the Indians (14-8, 8-3) walking three and breaking the school single-game strikeout record that he shared with Andrew Lorraine by one, with 16 in a Foothill League game at Hart.
Matt McAfee hit a grand slam and J.T. Stotts added a three-run inside-the-park home run for Hart during an eight-run first inning.
Calabasas 11, Nordhoff 1--Matt Jackson (7-0) remained unbeaten in two seasons by allowing one run in five innings for the Coyotes (20-2, 11-0) in a Frontier League game at Nordhoff (8-10, 6-5).
