Los Angeles is scheduled to lose its thrice-weekly Amtrak service to Las Vegas on Thursday, when the Desert Wind makes its last run. Meanwhile, the California Zephyr route between San Francisco and Chicago is scheduled to increase from four times a week to daily as of May 11. . . . American Express traveler’s checks have a new look--only their fourth redesign in 106 years. A new watermark, an embedded thread and a holographic foil are aimed at thwarting counterfeiters. Checks in the old 1994 design will continue to be honored.
