Releaguing Proposal Scuttled Regarding Notre Dame Move

A releaguing proposal that would place the Notre Dame High football team in a revamped Division I Del Rey League in 1998 has been put on hold.

The Southern Section releaguing committee Thursday instructed the Catholic Athletic Assn. to resubmit its proposal to divide the existing Mission and Del Rey leagues into three leagues. Under the proposal, Notre Dame, currently a member of the Division III Mission League, would switch places with Alemany.

Third degree: Buena High junior Troy Dumais finished third in the one-meter platform at the USA Diving Grand Prix in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Zhou Yilin of China defeated countryman Yu Zhou Cheng and Dumais at the International Swimming Hall of Fame Aquatic Complex.

“My goal,” Dumais said, “was for the Chinese to have to dive superior to beat me. And they had to do that. So I’m very happy.”

Taking a walk: Cleveland High point guard Jerome Grant has been invited to walk on at San Jose State. Grant helped the Cavaliers to a share of the North Valley League basketball title and the second round of the City Section 4-A Division playoffs.

* Notre Dame High soccer midfielder Megan Quinn, a 1996-97 All-Mission League selection, said she will accept an invitation to be a walk-on at UCLA next season.

Staff selected: Pepperdine basketball Coach Lorenzo Romar has been chosen an assistant for the 1997 USA 22 and Under World Championship team. Romar and Jim Crews of Evansville will assist Utah’s Rick Majerus, the head coach.

Honors: Freshman Christina Tolson of the Cal State Northridge track and field team has been honored as the Big Sky Conference women’s field event athlete of the week.

Tolson set a school record of 179-2 in the hammer throw to place second in the UC Irvine Invitational on Saturday, breaking her record of 171-5 set in the qualifying round of the California-Nevada championships at Northridge on April 26.

* USC senior Isaac Turner, a 1993 graduate of Burbank High, has been selected the Pacific 10 Conference men’s track athlete of the week.

Turner ran a personal best of 1:47.15 in the 800 meters to win the USC-UCLA-Brigham Young meet at USC on Saturday and exceed the automatic qualifying standard of 1:47.30 for the NCAA championships in Bloomington, Ind., on June 4-7.

* Sprinter Joe Criner and shotputter-discus thrower Cheree Hicks have been selected Cal State Northridge’s male and female athletes of the month for April.

Criner, a junior, won the 200 meters in the California-Nevada championships at Northridge on April 27 and he moved to sixth on the all-time school list in the 200 when he ran a then-personal best 21.09 seconds to place third in the Fresno Relays on April 5.

Hicks, a freshman from Littlerock High, set two school records in the discus and also moved to second on the all-time Matador list in the shotput.

After raising the school record to 172-1 in the discus in the Northridge Invitational on March 22, Hicks improved to 178-1 in a four-team meet at UCLA on April 12 and to 178-4 in the Mt. San Antonio College Relays on Apr. 20.

* Members of the Antelope Valley College softball team swept the top Foothill Conference honors.

Sophomore catcher Teri Tilley was selected most valuable player, sophomore Correna Berlinger was named most valuable pitcher and Gene Pagliaro was chosen co-coach of the year with San Bernardino Valley’s Kristen Hange.

Tilley batted .342 with three home runs and 26 runs batted in. Berlinger was 18-11 with a 2.81 earned-run average. She was 8-1 in conference games.
