Pooley Breaks In Course With 64 for 2-Shot Lead
DULUTH, Ga. — Greg Norman designed the course. Don Pooley mastered it.
Pooley shot an eight-under-par 64 Thursday to grab a two-shot lead after the opening round of the BellSouth Classic, being played for the first time at the new TPC Sugarloaf Country Club.
Norman, who designed the picturesque, 7,259-yard course that meanders through the rolling hills north of Atlanta, finished with a two-under 70 after bogeying the final two holes.
“I love this course,” Pooley said. “It’s fun to play. You can shape shots, think your way around and score.”
Five golfers were tied for second at 66, including Nick Price, who seems to be regaining his old form. He won the MCI Classic last month and his mental outlook is certainly better now that his former caddie, Jeff “Squeeky” Medlen, seems to be recovering after undergoing a second bone-marrow transplant for leukemia.
“It did pull me down for a long time” Price admitted. “I was really happy at Hilton Head, but everything wasn’t great.”
