Piranha update--Anaheim is changing quarterbacks for the third week in a row. Coach Mike Hohensee announced Thursday that rookie Mark Grieb will make his Arena Football League debut tonight. Grieb, who played at UC Davis, started the preseason as the Piranhas’ No. 3 quarterback, but he was impressive in two exhibition games--completing 10 of 14 passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns--and he had an excellent week of practice. Lee Williamson began camp as No. 1 on the depth chart but lost his job to Ron Lopez and then walked out of camp. Lopez lost the starting job after a shaky performance Saturday night in the Piranhas’ season-opening 33-32 loss to New Jersey. Two other changes in the starting lineup were dictated by injuries to defensive specialist Rodney Mazion (strained left knee) and receiver/defensive back Anthony Bridges (pulled groin). Defensive specialist Chauncey Hogan, who was acquired in the expansion draft from Connecticut, and receiver/defensive back Jason Oliver from USC will replace Mazion and Bridges on the active roster. Delvin Myles will start at defensive specialist and Hogan and Oliver will fill in for Bridges. The Piranhas will also bring fullback/linebacker James Johnson off the taxi squad to replace Tucker Grace, who started last week but will be on the four-man taxi squad this week.
SaberCat update--San Jose is coming off its worst loss in franchise history, a 47-21 pasting by the expansion Nashville Kats. The SaberCats are coached by former San Francisco 49ers’ linebacker Todd Shell. They were 0-2 against the Piranhas last season and are led by offensive specialist Titus Dixon, who had six catches for 69 yards against Nashville.
