Royal Too Much for Palmdale
Marc Chaffee had 13 kills and Nick Flanagan had 12 to pace the Royal High boys’ volleyball team to a 15-11, 15-6, 15-7 victory over Palmdale in the first round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs Friday at Royal.
Ryan Denihan had 10 kills and setter John Baxter had 38 assists and eight kills for the Highlanders (17-0).
Aaron Winchester had 16 kills and Jarrod Cline 27 assists for Palmdale (9-7).
Thousand Oaks d. Santa Maria, 15-8, 16-14, 15-3--Brian Hill had 12 kills and John Penfield 11 kills for the Lancers (13-2) in a first-round Division I match at Thousand Oaks. Max Samimi had 40 assists. Santa Maria finished 12-5.
Hoover d. Bell Gardens, 15-7, 15-5, 15-9--Nick Marbach had 17 kills and Andrew Russell had 13 kills for the host Tornadoes (11-5) in a Division I first-round match.
Valencia d. Moorpark 15-13, 15-6, 15-4--Chris Luechtefeld had 15 kills and Nate Cline had 37 assists for the Vikings (10-7) in a Division II defeat of the Musketeers (9-8) at Valencia.
Bell-Jeff d. Pasadena Poly, 15-13, 4-15, 15-9, 15-12--Marcos Flores had 22 kills and eight blocks and David Montes had 38 assists to lead the Guards (17-6) past the Tigers (13-7) in a Division III match at Bell-Jeff.
Leo Damasco had 19 kills for Pasadena Poly.
Crespi d. L.A. Baptist, 15-6, 15-9, 15-3--James Spratt had 13 kills and Ryan Hill had 12 for the Celts (9-8) in the Division III match at Crespi.
Matt Miller had 50 assists for the Celts, who play a second-round match Tuesday.
Nick Kaprelian had nine kills for L.A. Baptist (7-6).
Highland d. Buena, 16-14, 15-12, 9-15, 15-10--Tom Haight had 26 kills and teammate Karl Buckman had 13 kills and 14 digs to help Highland to victory in the Division I match at Buena.
Jody Shadrick had 57 assists and 20 digs for Highland.
Providence d. Flintridge Prep, 15-6, 15-6, 8-15, 15-12--D.J. Petcharamuk had 19 kills, 10 digs and four aces for the host Pioneers (18-0) in a Division III first-round match.
San Gabriel d. Glendale 15-9, 15-6, 12-15, 16-14--Jeremy Callister had 28 kills and 10 digs and Sung Kim added 13 kills in a Division I loss to the Matadors (14-1) at San Garbriel.
Phillip Chi had 24 kills and six blocks and Calvin Lau had 80 assists for San Gabriel.
Quartz Hill d. Canyon, 15-13, 11-15, 18-16, 16-14--Eric Stott and Darrin Haub each had 16 kills to help the Rebels (11-4) upset the Cowboys (13-1) in the Division I match.
Darren Link had 11 kills and eight blocks for Highland and setter Mario Grimm had 60 assists.
