City Council Will Consider Ways to Shorten Its Meetings
The City Council tonight will consider ways to shorten its semimonthly meetings, which often last six hours or more.
Council members have debated the issue many times. Last month, the council decided not to install red and green lights on the public podium to let speakers know when their time addressing the council was up.
The council meets the first and third Tuesdays of the month at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Public comments on non-agenda issues are limited to 30 minutes at the beginning of each session, with each speaker allowed three minutes.
During the last election campaign, several speakers--including candidates--exceeded the time limit, prompting officials to seek ways to cut down on the rhetoric.
The debate continues at the 7:30 session tonight at City Hall, 303 W. Commonwealth Ave.
In addition, the council will consider allowing banners advertising community events to hang across public streets.
